The Silchar Bar Association came into existence in the year 1874 when districts of Assam including Cachar were formed into the Chief Commissionership of Assam. The members with whom the Association started were Shri. Ram Gobinda Deb and Shri. Sambhunath Sen. At that time Deputy Commissioner used to grant pleadership ‘SANAD' after an informal test of respectability and ability. Later on when the first Munsiff was established at Silchar, Shri. Ram Gobinda Deb, pleader, was appointed Extra-Assistant Commissioner vested with the powers of the Munsiff. Membership of Bar Association gradually grew and before long, it attracted Law Graduates from Cachar and neighboring district of Sylhet. The Association which started with 2(two) members in 1874 had about 29(twenty-nine) members at the time of Partition of India which includes good number of displaced lawyers, mainly from Sylhet. The Silchar District Bar Association had always been at the vanguard of all progressive movements of the country and it had the proud distinction of being affiliated to the Provincial Congress Committee of Bengal for the purpose of electing delegates to the Congress Session and upto the Year 1920, the Association elected delegates to Congress session at various places from amongst its members and prominent public spirited outsiders. The Silchar District Bar Association started with 2(two) members in 1874, today has 460 members (as on 01-04-2010). The Association elects its office representatives in September every year.
